How does the J&S work?

I understand how the J&S works as far as the knock sensor and retarding ignation, but how does the system know which cylinder to retard and for what duration?

I would like to thank you guys for all the information you've given in the previous posts. I have been reading this board for about three months and find it extremely interesting and informative.

The J&S works because it sees the ignition signal. What tells the ignition to GO.

When the throttle is pressed an the TPS (throttle position sensor) sends a certain voltage, the J&S 'arms' itself, so you don't retard at idle, and off throttle situations. (this is how you tune it, by removing the TPS signal).

So when the knock sensor hears knock, it knows which cylinder it occured in, and then it retards that cylinder (if you have that setting). It uses a motorola processor, so it's pretty quick.
